I'm sure a lot of you read it anyway, but for those that don't I have to point you at today's Penny Arcade. There's some background to the comic behind the news link, but you shouldn't need it to get what kids are nowadays referring to as "luls".
No, don't ask, I'm only barely sure what they are. |

Apparently by writing the word wank on it. |

Oh dear lord. Hello Kitty contacts. Does anyone else find that a little terrifying?
Couple them with one of these and it could be one of the most disturbing things ever... |

Does anyone out there have a PC with XP media player 10 installed? I need to update the firmware on my MP3 player (finally dropped it once too often and had to replace the hard drive...) and for whatever reason only these two programs will allow me to accomplish this seemingly simple task. It'll only take 5 minutes, and there's a beer in it for you. I just want to get my musical housebrick working again.
And no, I can't get either of my computers to behave themselves, and the ones at work block the updater. Bloody Creative, honestly. Think they'd keep supporting their wildly out of date products, but noooo, can't have that can we... |

25 Looking for payday loan?
Good to know. Think I only scored that high thanks to my willingness to use one of them as a weapon against the others...
Lack of morality wins again!
EDIT: So, here's the real link, apparently clicking the image takes you to a dating site... |

Holy shit. Holy shit! I was a little worried about Heath Ledger being the new Joker, but looks like everything should be just fine... |

[Nov. 30th, 2007|10:40 am] |
Late last night, Hugo, Destroyer of Toothpicks, died after having a stroke. She seemed to pass peacefully, and has now been reunited with the Marquessa both spiritually in gerbil Valhalla, and physically in a pot on my balcony.
Donations as always should be sent to St. Josephat's Home for Poorly Rodents, where it will be used to fund the trust for wayward nutria, which teaches them yoga and meditative techniques to aid their rehabiiltation. |

Also, this is quite simply awesome. Sad that its too late to correct the damage and the retraction will be fuel for the conspiracy theorists, but still truly awesome.
This is shaping up to be a productive day... |

Ok then audience, since you're full of scientists, perhaps you can help me with something.
From what I remember about how the human eye works, we've got two types of receptor, one that can register colour (cones, I think) and one that just has a response to light or dark, so its basically black and white (rods, if the other one's cones), with the cones clustered in the middle and getting more scarce towards the edges. This means that our perhipheral vision is less sensitive to colour, but more sensitive to movement because the rods have a quicker firing rate.
Now, assuming that I'm right with that - I could google it I guess but I'm not going to because this should be more interesting - why does it appear that the edges of my vision are still colour? Can I just not percieve the lack of colour because its on the periphery of the bit I can focus on? Is it my brain filling in the colour information like it corrects the inversion of the vertical axis? Or, and I admit this is a bit more likely, am I just plain wrong? |

Some of you seem to have a fondness for the venerable MC Hammer. This is for you. Once you've seen it, I think you'll have seen all you want to of him.
The rest of you, perhaps it would be best if you didn't click on it. And probably not at work neither...
Edit: Some possible antidote for you. Excellent video!

| Attack of the ear worms |
[Oct. 19th, 2007|11:08 am] |
I come looking for help. For some reason I've got the Tetris background music stuck in my head, going round and round and roundandroundandroundandround.
Since the best way to get rid of an ear worm is to replace it with another, I need your suggestions, preferably with links so I can get this out of my brain.
Please, please help me... |
